TVNZ reporter Barbara Dreaver is in Tonga. She tells John Campbell there is an 'air of complacency' in Tonga, as many people have never experienced a category 5 cyclone and don't understand how devastating it could be.
underwater volcano off Tonga was spewing ash high into the air on Tuesday, causing several carriers to suspend air travel to the South Pacific island nation and turning the surrounding ocean blood red, residents and officials said. The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai underwater volcano, located about 65 km (40 miles) north of the capital Nuku‛alofa, was sending volcanic ash up to 4,500 meters (14,765 feet) into the air, the Wellington Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) said. The volcano, which first erupted in 2009, had been rumbling in recent weeks before exploding violently in the past few days, The New Zealand Herald newspaper reported. Jan 21 2015 New island created in Tonga volcanic eruption A volcanic eruption taking place in the Pacific archipelago of Tonga has created a new island, though scientists say it could soon sink back into the ocean. The volcano has been erupting for approximately a month in the ocean, 65 kilometers northwest of Tonga’s capital, Nukualofa, located on the main island of Tongatapu. The island, which has not yet been named, is around 1.8 kilometers by 1.5 kilometers and rises around 100 meters above the sea. “It's quite an exciting site, you get to see the birth of an island. Visually it was quite spectacular, but there was no big sound coming with it, no boom. It was a bit eerie,” said Nico Fournier, a New Zealand volcanologist, reported AP. When the volcano stops erupting, the ocean will...

One day return flight between Nuku'Alofa and 'Eua. Each flight is +/- 10 to 15 minutes and all the staff is very friendly. Seems I was not the first one to make such a return flight (you have less than twenty minutes at 'Eua but your boarding card is ready. A true aviation experience! Real Tonga operates domestic flights with that Y-12 (A3-SPV), one J-32 (A3-SKY) and one Saab-340 (A3-PUA). They have a MA-60 wich is curently grounded.

This video shows scenes of Faleolo Airport in Samoa. It shows the takeoff (flight NZ 995 on 25 June 2014 from Apia to Auckland), heading west over Apolima Strait which separates the two main islands of Upolu and Savaii. Then it flies south to New Zealand, passing over the beautiful coral islands, reefs and sandbanks of Tonga. Arrives in Auckland on a rainy wintry day. This is one of my first videos, so forgive the camera shake and clunky editing.
In late December 2014 into early 2015, a submarine volcano in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga erupted, sending a violent stream of steam, ash and rock into the air. When the ash finally settled in January 2015, a newborn island with a 400-foot summit nestled between two older islands – visible to satellites in space. The newly formed Tongan island, unofficially known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai after its neighbors, was initially projected to last a few months. Now it has a 6- to 30-year lease on life, according to a new NASA study. This video is public domain. In 2007 a group of Austrian community-radio-activists from Linz and Salzburg assisted the Sinazongwe community in the Southern Province of Zambia to set up their own community radio station, as part of cultural exchange and development programs focusing on the Tonga people who live on both sides of the Zambezi river - respectively Lake Kariba. Six years later it was time to service the station and install new equipment, a transmitter and antenna to provide coverage for a wider range of transmission even across the lake.
